Liversedge FC vs Ashton Athletic: FA Build Base Vase 2nd Qualifying Round

Ollie Strikes Fear into Ashton

Ashton Athletic kicked off toward the cowshed, and it was the visitors who had the first shot on 3 minutes from Joshua Nicholson, his effort was deflected with Porter gathering in goal. From the resulting clearance Fearon broke away down the right but his cross was easily caught by Ashton Keeper Pearson.

A slow start from Sedge had them trailing 1-0 down after 5 minutes when Perry’s cross from the right found Whyte and his low hard shot beat Porter in goal. Liversedge were soon back on level terms on 11 minutes when Walker and Walton had shots blocked and with the ball falling to Alfie Raw on the left; Raws’ cross found its way to goal poacher Fearon who made it 1-1.

The first half was fairly even with the visitors posing a threat on attack, Whyte had a free kick go wide of the post and then the visitors had two successive corners which Sedge cleared. Joseph Nicholson had a free kicked blocked after a Tarangadzo foul. Walker and Walton linked up well on the left and it ended when Pearson in the visitor’s goal saved Gaughan’s shot. Midway through the half Walton came off for attention with a cut above the eye and a shirt change after an arial collision with Declan Gallagher.

The 2nd half Sedge got in front on 47 minutes after Raw was fouled out on the right, a good ball in from Porritt’s free kick found Walton and he made no mistake with the header. A minute later Fearon’s cross found Walton but his back heel failed to find a Sedge player.

Sedge were well on top and looking a threat down the right side, Raw, Porritt and Fearon all combined well but the visitor’s keeper saved. Fearon had shots saved on 53 and 55 minutes, and after 59 minutes a goal looked certain for Sedge when Fearon and Walton set up Gaughan who wasted a scoring opportunity. Paul Walker had a volley go just over the bar and when Ashton’s Gallagher went direct with a long ball it found Birch on the left; Birch looked to be a threat, but Porritt was there to recover for the Sedge.

On 72nd minute mark the Clayborn saw a contender for goal of the season when Fearon’s 25-yard shot found the back of the net 3-1 to Sedge. Ashton then brought on Conal Gallagher and Wilson for Nicholson and Whyte. As the game came to a close Sedge made substitutions with Boshell coming on for Fearon in the 80th, and a few minutes later Bottomley for Gaughan on the 86th and Ghaichem for Raw in the 90th.
