Liversedge FC vs Maltby Main: NCEL

Liversedge The Main Winners

Despite Sedges flying start to the season, it was relentless pressure from Maltby which saw Sedge under the cosh for 25 minutes, a corner to the home side after just 2 minutes was headed away by Joe Walton. After 7 minutes Maltby looked to have scored a certain goal when Connor Cutts rounded Jordan Porter in goal but incredibly Jack Steers made a superb clearance off the line. It was all Maltby and 2 minutes later a Johnathan Williams free-kick hit the bar much to the relief of Sedge. The first 13 minutes the home side forced four corners but the Sedge defence was holding out well marshalled by Jack Steers and Kevy Tarangadzo. Sedge did force a corner of their own on 20 minutes but was easily cleared by Maltby. A good move by Sedge was then ended when James Pollard in the home goal thwarted Joe Walton.

After 25 minutes Maltby got the goal their play deserved albeit from a penalty from either a foul or handball to which none of the Sedge players knew why it was given and argued the point. Williams calmly slotted the ball home to put Maltby in front.

As the half wore on Sedge came more into the game and on 37 minutes were clearly denied a penalty themselves when a Maltby player handled the ball, but to the amazement of all Sedge players, management, and fans the referee did not give it saying he did not see it. With their tails now up 2 minutes later Sedge hit the post from a Joe Walton strike and crosses from Ollie Fearon were causing problems for the home defense.

Sedge came out for the 2nd half a much better side playing down the slope and on 50 minutes they got the early goal they wanted, a cross was chested down by Joe Gaughan who then slammed the ball into the back of the net, 1-1 and game on.

Walton had another shot saved and when Maltby broke away it was Porter in goal who denied Steven Hopewell. Michael Bottomley came on after 76 minutes for Ollie Fearon and almost put Sedge in front a minute later but Pollard in goal kept the scores level. Bottomley was causing lots of problems for the home defence and with 4 minutes remaining, from a cross Joe Walton rose above the Maltby defence to head home the winner. Harsh on the home side who contributed much to the game but with this Sedge never say die attitude they got back into the game and took the points home.
