A Spirited Display By Sedge at Church Earns The Points

Sedge kicked off and were first to attack with Joe Walton, Penistone regained the ball however but conceding a foul whilst doing so, a pass from Hardacre found Walton but Penistone defence kept a strong line leaving him offside. Penistone hit back when Shepherd and Scrivens worked well but Stewart failed to connect at the far post from Scrivens cross. Walker for Sedge crossed from the left and Fearon’s header went just wide of the post, again the home side came back when Howes cross found Stewart, but he was caught offside then good work from Firth and Howes ended with Firth’s shot blocked by Sedge. On 13 minutes Gaughan put Fearon in on the right, the Sedge winger saw his shot go just wide of the post.

Liversedge were pressing and forced 2 corners in succession and on 19 minutes they got the reward when from a Walker cross on the left, Tarangadzo scored. The Sedge back four were coping well with any threat from Penistone and were frustrating the home side who had Lovell and Firth going into the referee’s notebook. Kieran Ryan had a shot go well over the bar for Penistone as the home side were struggling to test Porter in goal. The first minute of the 2nd half Sedge had a good chance to double the lead, Walton’s cross from the right found Walker, his pass found Gaughan who failed to convert.

Walton had a shot on the turn deflected for a corner from which Steers heads, but Penistone cleared. Coduri for the home side had a shot saved by Porter in goal, back came Sedge with Walker and Daly on the right but ended with a poor cross from Fearon. On 63 minutes Liversedge got the goal their play this half deserved when Gaughan had a shot blocked and the referee gave a free kick for hand ball 21 yards out, from the resulting kick Paul Walker made no mistake making it 2-0.

Sedge then brought on Raw for Gaughan and the home side Guest for Stewart and on 67 minutes it was 3-0 to Sedge when a cross on the left found Fearon who scored, Penistone then brought on Rose for Firth. Fearon found himself cautioned for Sedge who then brought on Boshell for Walker and Penistone brought on Swinburn for Scrivens. Penistone then had their best chances when Swinburn and Charlesworth worked well but could not score. It seemed Swinburn’s shot was certain to go in but Steers cleared from almost on the line protecting Sedges clean sheet. After 86 minutes Ashley Flynn replaced Fearon for his Liversedge debut and Shepherd was cautioned for the home side.
