Liversedge FC vs Sunderland Ryhope CW: FA VASE  3rd ROUND

Field Of Dreams As Liversedge Create Club History

With a cold breeze blowing in from the North Sea Liversedge kicked off towards the stand behind the goal, the first attack was with Liversedge after 2 minutes but Joe Walton couldn’t get a cross in and the ball went for a goal kick. Vincent for Ryhope had a shot go over the bar after 7 minutes, but the referee’s whistle went for a foul and free kick to Sedge.

Morris on the right for Ryhope crossed but Tarangadzo cleared, and when Sedge broke Joe Walton passed to Fearon on the right but Jack Walker for the home side cleared the danger. Both sides were giving nothing away but on 27 minutes Sedge came close when from a Walker corner on the right Fearon headed wide. Davis on the right for Ryhope had a cross cleared by Tarangadzo and Walker just failed to turn and get a shot on goal from a free-kick for Sedge. Good play from Liversedge on 39 minutes saw Walker beat Morris and Trewick but Trewick managed to recover and clear for a corner. Fearon got a header in from the corner and it rebounded off a Ryhope defender for another corner, as it came over Steers saw his header saved by Winter in goal.

Fearon had another header go over the bar from a corner on 41 minutes and a Ryhope free kick by Jack Walker caused no problems for Porter in goal. Right on half time good work by Daly and Fearon found Alfie Raw for Sedge but Raw had strayed offside. As Kyle Davis kicked off the 2nd half for the home side Ellis tried his luck with a shot but it was blocked by Sedge who broke away, and as Ross Daly got to the edge of the Ryhope penalty area, he was stopped in his tracks by Ben Riding. Alfie Raw was cautioned for Sedge on 52 minutes, Braithwaite took the free-kick which went straight into Porter’s hands in goal. On 56 minutes Sedge threatened as Joe Walton went on a mazy run into the Ryhope penalty area beating 3 players, as he was brought down in the area the ball fell to Fearon who was also then brought down in the tackle but the referee was having none of the penalty claims. Alfie Raw had a shot cleared and as the ball fell to Tarangadzo his effort was blocked.  A long kick from Porter for Sedge found Joe Walton who contested in the air with Winter in goal and the big man gained a corner. Ryhope cleared and broke away with Ellis having a fine shot tipped over the bar by Porter.

Both sides brought on substitutes as penalties were looking likely and it was Sedge who went closest when from a free-kick Winter in goal fumbled and substitute Flynn’s shot hit the bar.  A Walker cross from the left and again Winter under pressure from Walton this time caught the ball on the line. In the dying seconds Liversedge had a good claim for handball turned down and from a free-kick Jack Steers at the far post just failed to connect. Final substitutions were made by both sides before the whistle went for 90 minutes and penalties. A fracas after the whistle saw Hardacre receive a red card and Tarangadzo a yellow as well as Wardle for Ryhope receiving a yellow card. Ryhope took the first penalty and scored and after 2 kicks each it was 2-0 to the home side, but then things began to turn Sedges way. With 2 good saves by Porter in goal and one that hit the bar Kenny, Flynn and Fearon all scored theirs. With the score at 3-3 up stepped Adam Field for the decider to smash the ball into the back of the net to put Sedge through.

Delirious scenes at the end from the Liversedge players making club history, reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase for the first time.
