Sedge’s Pre-Season

Liversedge returns to action next month as the season gets underway ahead of the 2024/25 Northern Premier Division East campaign. We have six games scheduled for the lads as they return to training before the new season begins.

First on the list for the team is an away trip to Northallerton Town on the 6th of July. They currently compete in the Northern League Division One, one division below Sedge and finished last season 18th. The North Yorkshire side plays their home matches at The Calvert’s Stadium and has recently appointed a new first-team manager in Jason Newall. The club enjoyed good cup form last decade, winning Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cups, and has been a recurring fixture in the Northern League since its formation in 1895.

Our next match sees Sedge return to Clayborn to welcome Northern Counties East side Wakefield AFC on the 9th. Last season saw Wakefield finish with a strong 4th place and as semi-finalists in the West Riding County Cup, losing out to eventual champions Pontefract Collieries. The club currently has a ground share with the rugby league side Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue and has been working its way up the football pyramid since its founding in 2019.

On the 13th, we will then be welcoming Birtley Town to Clayborn. The side from the northeast currently plays their football in the Northern League, finishing in 4th place by winning 24 of their 38 league games last season. The Hoops are currently playing at the Birtley Sports Complex and have appointed Reece Chapman as their new manager.

Our next pre-season match will be another away trip to Thackley AFC on the 16th. Another side who play their football in the Northern Counties East Division, securing a high midtable finish in 7th last season. The Dennyboys are currently managed by Danny Forrest and play their home matches at Dennyfield in North Bradford. They have never been relegated since being founding members of the Northern Counties East League.

We return to Clayborn for our final two friendlies before our league season gets underway, and Guiseley AFC are the visitors on the 19th. The Lions currently play their football in the league above Sedge and pushed for playoff positions throughout the season but fell away towards the end, finishing 10th in the league. Guiseley have played their home matches at Nethermoor Park and are one of the strongest sides in West Yorkshire since its founding in 1909. Former Bradford City and FC Halifax Town defender Mark Bower became manager under 2 months ago.

Our final pre-season match sees us welcome the highest-ranked team of the schedule to Clayborn in the form of Scarborough Athletic. The National League North side formed when Scarborough FC was wound up and has since risen through the leagues since their formation in 2007, winning several cups and leagues on their journey. Last season saw them finish 13th in the 6th tier. The Phoenix club play their home matches at the Flamingo Land Stadium after spending their first ten years ground sharing with fellow northeast side Bridlington Town at Queensgate. Currently, under the management of former York City midfielder Jonathan Greening, they will be Sedge’s last test before a new season begins.
